Resilience and Rebirth in Europe’s Cultural Crossroads
The energy and complexity of the Balkans is like no other region in Europe. From the natural beauty of Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast and the mountains of Herzegovina, to the old markets of Sarajevo and the Yugoslav monuments in Belgrade, the diversity in the region is incredible. When we travel through Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, and Serbia, the stories and communities we encounter inspire questions of nationalism, politics, and economics—and how they all mix together.
Atlas Workshops programs in the former Yugoslavia and the Western Balkans sift through the area’s geopolitical context, historical memory, and future. We examine how borders have shifted, how communities rebuild after conflict, and how identity is preserved or reshaped through language, culture, and everyday life. The region provides a powerful lens for exploring resilience, reconciliation, and the challenges of building unity amid diversity.
