Caribbean Culture, Colonial History, and Community Strength
The Dominican Republic is shaped by a complex history of migration, colonialism, and cultural blending that continues to define life across the island today. From the streets of Santo Domingo to rural mountain towns and coastal communities, the country reveals deep ties to Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and North America. Its relationship with neighboring Haiti and with the United States offers an important lens for exploring questions of identity, inequality, and regional connection across the Caribbean and North America.
Atlas Workshops programs in the Dominican Republic explore how history and geography shape culture, opportunity, and movement. We can investigate post-colonial dynamics, migration patterns, and the social and economic links between the DR, Haiti, and the broader Caribbean. Through themes like environmental sustainability, citizenship, and the role of sports in society, we consider how communities define themselves and express evolving forms of culture.
